How to Make AI-Assisted Writing Sound Human
AI tools are good at producing a competent first draft quickly. The problem is that competent drafts tend to sound alike: even sentence lengths, safe word choices, and the same handful of phrases. Readers notice, even if they cannot say why.
The fix is editing, not avoiding AI. Here are ten edits that make the biggest difference.
1. Vary sentence length on purpose
Machine drafts often settle into sentences of 15 to 20 words, one after another. Human writing swings. Follow a long, detailed sentence with a short one. Like this. The contrast creates rhythm and makes key points land.
2. Cut the stock phrases
Some phrases appear so often in AI output that they now signal it: "in today's fast-paced world", "delve into", "a testament to", "navigate the complexities", "unlock the power of", "game-changer". Delete them and say the plain thing instead.
3. Replace general claims with specific ones
"Email marketing can improve engagement" says nothing. "Our Tuesday newsletter gets twice the clicks of our Friday one" says something only you could write. Specific numbers, names, places and dates are the fastest way to make text feel lived-in.
4. Add one opinion
Drafts generated to be helpful often refuse to take a side. Pick one point where you genuinely disagree with common advice and say so. Readers remember the writer who had a view.
5. Use your own examples
Swap at least one generic example for something from your own work: a client conversation, a mistake, a result. If you cannot think of one, that section may not need to exist.
6. Read it out loud
Anything you stumble over when speaking will trip readers too. Reading aloud also exposes repetition: if three paragraphs in a row start with "Additionally", you will hear it.
7. Trim the throat-clearing
Openings like "In this article, we will explore..." and endings like "In conclusion, it is clear that..." add length without value. Start with the most interesting sentence and stop when you have made the point.
8. Break the perfect structure
AI drafts love symmetrical lists of three and identical paragraph shapes. Let one section be a single sentence. Let another run longer because it matters more.
9. Write the way your audience talks
A LinkedIn post for accountants and a TikTok caption for students should not share vocabulary. Use the words your readers use, including the informal ones.
10. Check it before you publish
Run the draft through a style check to spot uniform sentences and stock phrases you missed. The QuillZap AI checker does this in your browser without uploading your text, and the Content Humanizer can suggest a rewrite you then edit in your own voice.
A note on honesty
The goal of these edits is better writing, not hiding where a draft came from. Fact-check anything an AI tool wrote, follow the disclosure rules of your industry or school, and put your name only on work you have actually reviewed.
