A Simple Hashtag Strategy That Still Works
Hashtags matter less than they did a few years ago, because platforms now understand your content from the caption, the audio and the image itself. They still help in one important way: they tell the platform which community your post belongs to. Used well, they put you in front of the right people.
Relevance beats volume
A tag with tens of millions of posts moves so fast that your post disappears in seconds. A tag used by a few thousand people in your exact niche keeps your post visible to an interested audience for longer. The aim is the right audience, not the biggest one.
Use a layered mix
- Broad tags (1 to 2) describe the category: #marketing, #fitness.
- Niche tags (3 to 5) describe the specific topic: #emailmarketingtips, #kettlebellworkout.
- Community tags (1 to 3) describe who it is for: #freelancewriters, #newrunners.
- One branded tag that is unique to you or a series you run.
How many per platform
- Instagram: a focused set of roughly 3 to 8 relevant tags tends to work better than the maximum allowed.
- TikTok: 3 to 5 tags that describe the video and its audience.
- LinkedIn: 3 to 5 professional topic tags at the end of the post.
- X / Twitter: one or two at most, or none. Extra tags mostly cost characters.
Platforms change their guidance often, so check each one's current creator advice from time to time.
Build a reusable set
Create three or four hashtag groups, one per content pillar, and save them in your notes. Rotate the niche tags every few weeks so you are not posting the identical block every time, and drop any tag that never brings in reach.
Avoid these mistakes
- Tags that have nothing to do with the post. They attract the wrong audience and can hurt reach.
- Banned or spammy tags. Search a tag before using it; if the results look off, skip it.
- Copying a competitor's full set. Their audience is not quite yours.
